Caring for employees' health
Navigation: Index Page | < Previous Chapter | Next Chapter >

Business owners and managers must give utmost importance to the health of their employees. It should be noted that having healthy workers is an asset of any organization.

Health is important and therefore, it must be given priority. Many jobseekers look for institutions that offer health benefits. This is a responsible move for it is quite understandable that getting sick can be expensive; thus, the best way to prepare for it is having health insurance.

Likewise, employers do have an obligation to look out for the health of their workers. Having this principle in mind would appear beneficial for the business in the long run. Healthy employees are more productive, and in effect, this could very well help increase profit. Many companies invest on health insurance, even recognizing this as a wise move. Getting health coverage for a group is cheaper than purchasing individual packages. Hence, this should not become a problem. Companies may also choose what kind of health program they would want their employees to avail. Common options are traditional, Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), and Health Maintenance Organization (HMO).

Traditional health coverage is flexible but also expensive. The employee is free to tap any doctor or visit a hospital of their choice and receive treatment. HMO and PPO are cheaper options. In HMO, employers will pay a fixed amount per employee enrolled in the package. The HMO builds a network of doctors and medical centers. Employees get treatment from HMO members only. PPO, meanwhile, works like HMO. It has a group of physicians and hospitals; however, the added feature here is that employees are allowed to consult non-members of PPO. Workers need to pay a higher amount for doctors and hospitals outside the PPO network.

Whatever health program a company opts, this is definitely a big help to employees in case of emergencies. The health of any person can never be guaranteed a hundred percent in good condition at all times. Thus, it is better to make some preparations for such situations.

Meanwhile, there are companies that extend health benefits to the immediate family of their employees. This move is very much appreciated by workers, and at the same, is still beneficial on the part of the company. This is because your employee is also affected and gets distracted each time a family member gets sick. Hence, it is good for employers to take action in ensuring the health of the family of its employees. Remember that productivity may suffer if the worker becomes too distracted by personal problems.

Another important thing is that business owners, managers, and supervisors should also create and impose certain rules related to emergency absences. A common practice here is that employees are asked to notify their supervisors hours before their shift starts, in case they could not report for work. Supervisors, on the other hand, are responsible to relay this to the team and seek for replacement if needed. It is important to ensure the smooth flow of operations, even if there are employees who are on emergency leave.

In case of hospitalization, either by the employee or a member of his or her family, the company must see to it that there is no problem in availing of their health coverage through its Human Resource department. Having trouble with the health plans would only add stress to the employee. Hence, be sure that a company representative is there to give assistance.
