Implementing a BSC refers to turning the concepts written as documents
into actions i.e. materializing them.
The BSC has to reflect the
strategies of the organization. For this is required an understanding of
not only the structure and systems of the organization but also of the
history, culture and management style. The implementation process is
also organization specific, like the formulation. Therefore, “one size
fits all” approach does not work here. It has to be tailored as per the
needs of the organization. The size of the organization, however, does
not have an important bearing on the implementation process.
Companies with 100 to 1200 employees may successfully bring the same
strategy into action, provided it communicates the strategies in a well
enough manner. The time needed for implementation may range from one to
three years. A team of about half a dozen people work full time on the
effort, executives do a lot of interviewing and brainstorming. The
initial rollout takes less time, up to four months but another one year
might be needed for incorporating the BSC in the management systems.
- Prerequisites - a clear understanding of the vision and
strategy of the organization
- Project Planning - the project of implementing BSC should
be planned like any other project, i.e. due importance has to be
given. Standard Project Management Procedures should be followed.
- Implementation - it should be considered as a separate
management system development project.
