KPIs in Justice- Court

Court is an authoritative body that operates under the laws of the land and works with a basic aim of providing social, morale, legal or ethical justice to the public

Courts are the means of resolving the disputes for the people and all have the right to bring their legal claims in front of the court to attain justice. Likewise, the person against which the case is being filed in the court, or who is accused of a crime, also possesses the right to present his/her defense before a court. Courts work as impartial body for both the parties and helps in settling the claims as quickly as possible.

Court operates with the sole responsibility of delivering justice to the people in a timely manner. As correct decision making is an important aspect of a court justice, the timeliness also plays a very crucial role in deciding whether a qualitative justice is delivered or not. A lot of time is consumed in processing the cases (both civil and criminal) in the court from filing an appeal to final hearing and execution of court orders. So it is important to set specific measures regarding time standards to enhance the movement of cases in the litigation process.

For the success of this legal system it is quite necessary that more and more people are able to reach the court to claim justice. So it is important that proper education regarding the justice service must be given to all groups of the society whether rich or poor, without any discrimination. Educating the public the legal procedures to access the justice services is critical and should be carried out with proper planning.

A court has to deal with a number of challenges in the way of ensuring quality justice to the society. Growing number of pending cases with the court is often a common problem that is needed to be resolved in an effective manner. A high time to disposition rate shows the inefficiency of court to provide timely justice to the public and needs to be reduced. If the court is experiencing a high recidivism rate in the overall cases filed, it is an issue of concern too.

KPIs with relate to Justice-court can be organized under four major sections- Service Efficiency Perspective, Decision Making Perspective, Operations Perspective, and Public Trust and Reach Perspective. Service Efficiency Perspective shows how effectively the judicial authority is operating. It consists of KPIs like time to disposition, clearance rate, % pending cases, etc. Decision Making Perspective talks about KPIs like number of false arrests, % court dispositions that match to an arrest, % dip in events where wrong person is released from the custody and recidivism rate. Operations Perspective can be judged through % increase in scheduled hearings, court staff efficiency level, etc. Public Trust and Reach Perspective consists of KPIs like public satisfaction level, court justice access level, % reduction in civil complaints against law enforcement, etc.
